My First Blanket Crochet Projects

I wanted to share some of my very first crochet projects. I first became interested in learning how to crochet during the summer of 2017. I had just finished my sophomore semester at ASU and needed something to work on throughout the summer. I decided one day to look up videos on YouTube to learn the basics about crocheting to see if it was something I could do.

It seemed easy enough so I went to Hobby Lobby to pick up supplies. I figured I could make a blanket using single crochet stitches. I picked up three different colors of their cheapest yarn and started to work on it. The only thing was I didn't realize how much of a project I had just gotten myself into and how badly I had estimated the amount of yarn I needed to finish my project. 3 months and a gazillion skeins of yarn later I finally finished!
It didn't end up being the most perfect blanket but I had successfully made it all on my own. The edges were pretty straight except for the first 10 rows which are super loose compared to the rest of the blanket. Overall, it didn't look too bad for a beginner. Upon completion it ended up being approximately 48" x 66". I originally wanted it to be 48" x 60" so it wasn't too far off.

The next summer, I decided to start on another blanket. I had just had the roughest semester of my entire college experience so it was time to relax. I decided this time to watch YouTube videos on how to make a chevron blanket. After figuring out the basics, I went to Hobby Lobby again to pick out colors. This time I chose 4 different colors of a slightly better quality yarn, Yarn Bee Soft Secret. (This is now my favorite yarn to work with!)
After several months I successfully finished my blanket. This one ended up being about 4' x 6'. I was a little better at estimating the size for this one. I also learned that if you use just the back loops of the previous row for your new row, it gives the piece a nice texture and it ends up being so much softer. This by far is my favorite blanket and I love using it any time of the year.
